IRS hacked, thieves made off with 100K taxpayers’ data

Hackers accessed the servers at the Internal Revenue Service to steal data from as many 100,000 taxpayers, the agency disclosed today.
The thieves accessed the data through an online service provided by the IRS and took financial data related to users’ actual tax returns.

New online data terror powers proposed

Planned new laws to give police and spies stronger powers to "target the online communications" of terrorist suspects are in the Queen's Speech.Downing Street said that measures in the Investigatory Powers Bill would provide the authorities "with the tools to keep you and your family safe".It will "address gaps" in intelligence gathering and access to communications data which is putting "lives at risk".

Sony Pictures hacked, entire computer system reportedly unusable

Reports that Sony Pictures has been hacked have been trickling in this morning, after a thread appeared on Reddit claiming all computers at the company were offline due to a hack.According to the Reddit thread, an image appeared on all employee’s computers reading “Hacked by #GOP” and demanding their “requests be met” along with links to leaked data.The Reddit user that posted the thread posted a year ago that they worked at Sony Pictures.

A document posted on pastebin earlier contains 400 Dropbox usernames and passwords, which the poster claims are just a tiny fraction of a massive hack that compromises up to 7 million accounts

Google is making encryption standard in the next version of Android

    Less than a day after Apple detailed new efforts in user privacy for its products, Google now says about plans to encrypt user data on all Android devices. Speaking to The Washington Post, Google says data encryption will now be a part of the activation process instead of an optional feature. The end result is that whatever data is stored on that device, be it a phone or tablet, will be inaccessible unless the person has the correct password.
