We might never be able to settle the age-old argument of whether whiskey tastes best on its own or with an ice cube, but we can all agree that these 3D printed Suntory Whisky ice cubes are super cool!
According to AdWeek, the mini frozen statues were created by TBWA\Hakuhodo as a way to advertise the Japanese whiskey brand. The CNC router — which stands for computer numerical control — was programmed to carve 3D images provided by the Autodesk 123D app out of blocks of ice. To keep the medium from melting, the machine was kept at a chilly -7 degrees Celsius.
CNet points out that Suntory also created a contest for people to submit their own ideas for cubes. The top ten winners were taken to a secure location and given a drink with their winning creations. The process started with a larger drill bit, was finished with a smaller one and took between one and six hours to complete depending on the amount of detail inherent in the design. “A touch of chilled whiskey polishes the surface of the ice and gives a beautiful shine to the sculpture,” added TBWA\Hakuhodo’s Miwako Fujiwara.
The site posted a number of different cubes featuring everything from intricately designed buildings and guitars to the Statue of Liberty and a mermaid, but we were drawn to the geekier offerings like Mario, Godzilla, Batman and the classic Apple computer.
CNC routers still cost a pretty penny these days, but assuming you could get your hands on one, keep it at the right temperatureand have a great connection in the blocked ice game, what are the first designs you’d print out to keep your drink at the perfect temperature while sipping?
