Around the middle of the 20th century, the View-Master evolved from stereoscopic viewers. Now, Mattel has teamed up with Googleto bring you the next evolution of the View-Master.
It’s a much more streamlined design than the View-Master of old, which is understandable. This is a totally different piece of technology. Considering that Google was involved in its development, it won’t shock you to know that the 2015 View-Master is built around Google Cardboard.
The View-Master still comes with a disc, but now it’s called an “experience reel.” It’s there to help you navigate through the virtual world: hover over it to display icons, select one, and press down the shutter button to start your journey.
When will you be able to buy one of these slick, new View-Masters? Not surprisingly, Mattel is planning to have them on store shelves in time for the holiday shopping rush. They should arrive sometime in October, with the companion app popping up in Google Play and the App Store at the same time.
Mattel plans to sell the View-Master for $30 (and additional experience reels for $14.99), though it sounds like you might not even need the View-Master itself to enjoy their VR experience. At the New York Toy Fair they’re letting visitors test it out with a Nexus phone and a real Google Cardboard.
Hard to believe this thing has its roots in the toy that Jodie Foster promoted back in the early 70s:
